New Student’s Welcome Event

The Welcome Event for new SUPA students was held on 28th October at Our Dynamic Earth in Edinburgh. First year students from across SUPA came to learn about the excellent research in SUPA, to meet colleagues in other universities and to receive advice from their peers.

Prof Sheila Rowan, the Scottish Government’s Chief Scientific Advisor, spoke about her involvement with the recent discovery of gravitational waves and her work in science policy.

Dr Hermione Cockburn, the Scientific Director of Our Dynamic Earth presented the history of the centre and spoke eloquently about her work in science communication.

After a lively session of networking, Katherine Rumble a final year PhD student at the University of Edinburgh gave her perspective on doing a PhD.

Finally, Professor Wilson Poon delivered a high speed and highly entertaining lecture on the nature of natural philosophy and the physics of caramel.
